Iris Light secures US Air Force STTR – Phase II contract

The Phase II STTR contract enables continued R&D of integrated photonic frequency combs for U.S. Air Force use cases

Iris Light has been awarded a Phase II Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) contract from the U.S. Air Force through the AFWERX Open Topic program. The award supports a collaborative effort between Iris Light and the University of Arizona to advance chip-scale optical frequency combs using Iris Light’s proprietary photonic ink platform combined with the University of Arizona’s leading comb technologies.

The Phase II STTR program is designed to accelerate the development and demonstration of promising technologies that address critical defense needs. Through this effort, Iris Light and the University of Arizona will focus on integrating nanomaterial-based photonic inks with established frequency comb architectures — advancing toward compact, scalable, and manufacturable on-chip solutions.

This award reflects the Air Force’s continued interest in photonic technologies that can enable next-generation capabilities in communications, sensing, timing, and navigation. For Iris Light, the contract represents an important step in translating its nanomaterials innovation into integrated photonic devices through collaborative development with academic and government partners.
