Iris Light Awarded U.S. Air Force AFWERX SBIR Phase I Contract - May 2023

The award supports early development of nanomaterial-enabled photodiodes for next-generation LIDAR imaging.

Iris Light was awarded a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract from the U.S. Air Force through the AFWERX program. The project focused on advancing on-chip photodiodes operating near 2 µm for LIDAR imaging applications, leveraging Iris Light’s proprietary photonic ink platform.

Through this Phase I effort, Iris Light evaluated the feasibility of integrating nanomaterial-based photodetectors directly onto silicon using scalable, semiconductor-compatible processes. The work demonstrated the potential of photonic inks to enable long-wavelength detection in compact, manufacturable device architectures relevant to airborne and ground-based sensing systems.

The AFWERX SBIR program is designed to accelerate innovative technologies that address critical Air Force needs. This award marked an early milestone in Iris Light’s collaboration with defense partners and its continued development of nanomaterial-enabled photonic devices for advanced imaging and sensing.
